The discussion about the concept ICCAs in Nepal was started from the late 2008. It was a result of the series of international events and decisions. The major international events include CBD-COP, World Park Congress, World Conservation Congress and decisions related to the importance of the recognition of the traditional and customary laws and practices of the indigenous peoples and local communities. Members of the communities from different eco-regions, including stakeholders for the biodiversity conservation in Nepal, discussed about the diverse issues and concerns of conservation works in the gathering held in 2009 in Kathmandu. This gathering is considered as the First National Gathering of the ICCAs in Nepal. The Second National Gathering of the ICCAs held in 2010 in Kathmandu, formed an ad hock committee of the ICCAs in Nepal. This committee then was reorganized into “ICCA Network Nepal” in the Third National Gathering of ICCAs held in 2011. This gathering decided to register this network as a national federation. Forth National Gathering of ICCAs held in 2012 also decided to continue the efforts of the registration process. However, the registration of the national federation could not become successful until 2023 and hence, realizing the difficulties of the registration of national federation, the Fifth National Gathering of ICCAs held in 2023 decided to register it as ICCA Network Nepal. Finally, ICCA Network Nepal, as association of the communities, individuals and organizations committed to the nature-culture conservation, was registered in February 2025. This network aims to develop awareness and respect of local ecological and socio-cultural history as crucial to provide appropriate recognition and support to ICCAs.
